NHS starts small-scale medical drone delivery service in London
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has partnered with Apian, a healthcare logistics company founded by NHS doctors, and Wing, a drone delivery company, to start transporting urgent pathology items, such as blood samples, by electric drone.
The project aims to improve patient care while reducing traffic congestion and pollution in the local communities. Reducing blood sample transport from an average of half an hour to under two minutes via drone significantly speeds up analysis turnaround times for high-risk surgical patients, improving timely decision-making and productivity of clinical staff. Wing drones can improve efficiency and create fewer emissions compared to the alternative car, van and motorbike deliveries currently used in London.
The small-scale trial is planned to start in Lambeth and Southwark in the coming weeks. This is a unique drone service tailored for hospital use, not home deliveries. It will operate with a strictly limited number of flights, not exceeding 10 per day, during the hours of 9am to 4pm, between Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. The operations are fully authorised and overseen by relevant authorities.
