A digital twin is only as useful as it is current. In the UK, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require responsible persons in many multi-occupied residential buildings to carry out regular fire door checks, and taller buildings must provide floor plans and building information to the fire service. A 3D record that is refreshed after works makes those checks and handovers easier to evidence.
A practical starting point does not have to be a laser scan. Bart has been building scaled 3D models of buildings directly from architects’ floor plan PDFs, described in Projects and in the post on UK digital twins from floor plans linked below. Those models can later be checked and updated with drone or phone scans, and paired with automated detection of fire doors and signage.
